As we say goodbye to the summer days and hello to the frosty mornings, warm drinks are back on the cards and the shelves are quickly filling with autumnal snacks. People up and down the country are looking for ways to keep warm and for a pick-me-up to get through the longer and colder days. And what better way to mark Bonfire Night and those cosy nights in than with a homely, warm snack to give you a moment of indulgence and a gooey S’more by the bonfire.
Bonfire Night – S’mores recipe
There’s nothing quite like enjoying a s’more around a campfire on Bonfire Night. The warm glow of the fire, the smell of the toasted marshmallows, and the taste of the gooey chocolate all combine to create a truly special experience. Walker’s Shortbread has a recipe with just the right combination of melted goodness and crunch, to make those colder nights a bit more exciting.
Simply preheat your grill with a baking sheet and place a piece of chocolate on top of one Walker’s Shortbread Rounds, which have a crunchy Demerara sugar edge, and then top with a marshmallow – the chunkier the better! If you’re looking for a bit more sweetness, try adding a spread of your favourite jam on the shortbread before placing on top of the marshmallow. Place this under the grill for around 2-3 minutes watching carefully until the marshmallow is toasted. Remove from the oven and carefully top with shortbread and press down and watch the melted marshmallow and gooey chocolate ooze out. Curl up and have your s’mores with a hot drink and repeat if you’re longing for another.
For those with an air fryer, try making your s’mores that way. Put four Walker’s Shortbread Highlanders upside down in the air fryer and put a marshmallow on top of each biscuit. Set to heat at 160°C for 3 minutes. Once done, open the air fryer and add a square of your favourite chocolate on top of each marshmallow, then heat again at 160°C for 1 minute. Remove carefully from the air fryer and smoosh on the four remaining Highlanders as tops. As you open the air fryer you’ll notice the kitchen fill with the scent of irresistible sweetness, as if stepping back in time to visit Joseph Walker’s bakery. You can even heat your Walker’s Shortbread Fingers this way, enjoying them warmed as if fresh out the oven to stay snug as you stand by the campfire.
Walker’s Shortbread is a family-run business dates back to 1898 when its founder, Joseph Walker, opened his bakery, based in the Scottish Highlands. This recipe is still used today, along with a masterful baking technique which ensures the brand’s iconic shortbread is baked to perfection. The buttery flavour of Walker’s shortbread is what makes it so popular across the globe and heating it up at home or on the campfire is the ideal way to bring its rich flavours to life. This s’mores recipe is a real crowd pleaser for Bonfire Night, working to keep you warm and cosy while out in the cold air enjoying the celebrations. They go down well during gatherings with friends and family and are also a great option for a cosy movie night curled up at home with a hot drink.
Warmed Shortbread – Air fryer hack
There’s nothing better than enjoying home baked goods which are fresh out of the oven; the way a biscuit melts in your mouth when you sneak it, still warm, from the baking tray. But have you ever thought about using an air fryer to achieve that same freshly baked feeling using the biscuits in your cupboard?
It’s perfect for those who live a busy lifestyle and don’t have much time to do their own home baking, but who still want to take time to enjoy a warm, sweet treat.
