Divisive Christmas ingredient is packed with health benefits, according to a nutritionist…
With the festive season comes many family traditions: a Harry Potter movie marathon, the Boxing Day walk, bets on who will fall asleep first after Christmas dinner, and, of course, the timeless Brussels sprout debate.
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a heated discussion over whether the divisive vegetable is delicious or disgusting, but whether you love or loathe them, they’re packed full of impressive health benefits.
Nutritionist Sarah Fancourt from recipe box service Gousto is shining a light on why this one ingredient must be in your Christmas dinner, with a surprisingly simple trick to gain optimal health benefits.
“Sprouts are a wonderful vegetable,” Sarah says. “We love them at Gousto because they’re packed full of vitamins, which are amazing for your body.”
A gut health saviour
“As they’re high in fibre, sprouts are great for your gut health, helping to boost digestion. Essential for all the rich food consumed over Christmas! Fibre also aids blood sugar regulation, which will keep you feeling energised and ready to embrace all the festive activities.”
A winter defence wonder
“In the season of sniffles, sprouts can help you remain in good health throughout the cold and flu spell. They’re loaded with immune-boosting vitamins, like Vitamin C.”
A bone boost
“Brussels sprouts are also loaded with Vitamin K, which helps to prevent blood clotting and looks after your bone health from the inside. This is even more important than usual when it’s frosty and cold outside.”
Sarah has also revealed her simple trick to absorb all the amazing nutrients in Brussels sprouts, which might be unexpected…
“It’s not commonly known, but fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin K are most effectively absorbed alongside dietary fat; something like olive oil.”
“I’d recommend cooking your Brussels in a high-quality olive oil to maximise vitamin absorption and feel your best over Christmas. Season’s greetings!”
