If you’ve ever been tempted to fill your garden, windowsill or balcony with fragrant, flavoursome plants, She Grows Veg has just the thing with its brand new range of heirloom herbs that you can grow from seed to elevate your cooking and connection with nature.
For the first time, She Grows Veg has launched 13 new herb varieties, chosen for both their cooking and ornamental properties. These heirloom seeds are totally unique and have been carefully curated as the perfect varieties for growing on the windowsill, or in the garden. Heirloom herbs are known for their fantastic flavour, making these a simple and cost-effective way to add an extra flourish to your dishes.
The new seeds available include:
- Mountain Mint – A non-spreading mint alternative with a lovely peppermint flavour and scent. A perennial with pretty pink to white flowers, it makes a great edimental addition to your garden border.
- Greek Oregano – Greek oregano is known for being the best for flavour. Wonderful in all kinds of dishes, it can be grown in pots, on windowsills or in the garden, with a final height of around 60cm.
- Orangelo Thyme – Orangelo creates a bushy fragrant groundcover or can be grown in containers as an edimental, producing tiny white blushed flowers. This has the usual thyme scent with overtones of citrusy orange.
- Sally Basil Lettuce Leaf – An ornamental variety with huge lettuce-leaf shaped crinkly leaves flushed with dark purple. Great for containers or in the garden, serve with homegrown tomatoes and summer dishes.
- Fennel Fino – A variety of fennel that produces white bulbs with a fine anise flavour and feathery foliage that can be used as a herb/garnish.
- Confetti Coriander – Part of the Parsley Family, this variety is unusual for its fine foliage resembling carrot tops, yet it has all of the delicious scent and flavour of standard large leafed coriander. A fantastic addition to Asian cooking and can also be harvested for seed to use as a spice.
- Dill Domino – A pretty, compact dill variety perfect for containers and veg beds. Its foliage has a lovely blue tinge and produces plenty of delicious fronds for you to cut at and add to dishes.
- Chinese Garlic Chives – Also known as Chinese leeks, this is a perennial herb with flat, broad leaves, pretty white flowers and a mild, sweet garlic flavour that does not linger in the mouth like conventional garlic. Fabulous in Asian cooking, they can be eaten raw or cooked in many dishes.
- Smokey Fennel – Typically grown in herb gardens for its anise-flavoured, smoky-bronze foliage, but is also great as an ornamental plant with yellow summer flowers.
- Lovage – Much like giant flat leaf parsley in appearance but with a distinctive flavour that combines the savoury tastes of celery and anise. You can use the young leaves of this perennial in soups, stews and salads, or harvest more mature foliage for homemade pesto.
- Corsican Mint – Also known as Rock Mint, this is native to Corsica, Sardinia and Italy and forms beautiful mounds of aromatic micro leaves that are ideal for containers or ground cover.
- Turnip Rooted Parsley Hamburg – A really unusual type of parsley that produces both edible roots and leaves that can be used in cooking. The leaves are aromatic and flat green, and can be used like ordinary parsley and the roots can be used in soups and stews like a turnip or parsnip.
- Sage – This stable perennial herb is great for container growing and can be harvested all year round.
A wonderful beginner grower starter crop, growing herbs from seed is economical for any keen gardener or passionate home cook. Herbs have the added advantage that they can be grown on a windowsill or in a container if you’re short on space.
