With Valentine’s Day around the corner, many people will be using the romantic day to sport red lipstick. However, did you know that there’s a certain knack for finding the perfect red lipstick?
Saffron Hughes, the makeup artist (MUA) at FalseEyelashes.co.uk, has shared her top tips for finding the perfect shade and application techniques.
Cool, warm, or neutral? How to uncover your skin’s undertone
Saffron said, “Understanding your skin’s undertone is the most important step when selecting the perfect red lipstick. Most people overlook this fundamental step, but it’s the difference between a good and a great lip look.
If your skin burns easily in the sun and your wrist veins appear distinctly blue or purple, you’re definitively cool toned. By contrast, Warm-toned individuals will notice golden skin qualities and green-tinted veins. For those sitting in the neutral zone – you’re the lucky ones who look fantastic in both silver and gold jewellery.”
How to pick the perfect red for your skin tone
Saffron has also recommended the perfect red lipstick depending on your skin tone,
For cool tones: “Those with cool undertones should gravitate towards sophisticated blue-based reds. Think of shades like raspberry or cherry. For example, Maybelline’s Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in ‘Siren in Scarlet’ or Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Hollywood Vixen’ are excellent choices. These hues not only complement your natural skin undertones but also make your teeth appear whiter.”
For warm tones: “If you have warm undertones, embrace rich, golden-infused fire engine reds. Look for lipsticks with orange or peachy undertones to illuminate your natural warmth. Maybelline’s Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in ‘Assertive’ or Clinique Pop Longwear Lipstick in ‘Poppy Pop’ are fantastic options. These shades will enhance your skin’s natural glow and create a harmonious look.
For neutral tones: “You’re the chameleons of the lipstick world,” Hughes says. A perfectly balanced red that blends blue and orange undertones will look stunning on you. Try Maybelline’s Color Sensational Creamy Matte in ‘Rich Ruby’ or MAC’s ‘Ruby Woo’. These universal reds offer versatility and suit a wide range of occasions.”
Hughes adds, “Remember, these are guidelines, not rules. The most important factor is how confident you feel wearing the shade. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different reds to find your perfect match. And always consider the lighting – what looks great in natural daylight might appear different under artificial lighting, so test your chosen shade in various environments.”
A MUA shares a step-by-step guide to perfect your red lip application
Saffron said, “As red is such a strong colour, preparing your lips is key. Begin with a thorough lip exfoliation to create an irresistibly smooth canvas. You can buy this ready-made, or you can mix a tablespoon of coconut oil with two teaspoons of sugar for a homemade scrub that works wonders.
On priming, Hughes advises, “After exfoliating, apply a quality lip primer and allow it to absorb for about five minutes. By doing this, it gives your lipstick has something to stick to, significantly extending its wear time.”
When it comes to application, Hughes stresses the importance of starting with an outline: “Your lip liner is your secret weapon. Start by marking an X on your cupid’s bow, then carefully connect it to the outer corners of your lips. For the bottom lip, begin at the centre and work your way outwards, tracing your natural lip edge. This technique not only defines your lips but also prevents feathering and extends the longevity of your look.”
To fill in the lips, Hughes recommends the following approach: “Using a flat lip brush, apply your chosen red lipstick with care and control. Start by layering over your lip liner, then fill in the rest of your lips. The brush allows for more precise application, especially in those tricky corners.”
To perfect the look, Hughes suggests a professional finishing touch: “For that crisp, polished edge, use a small amount of concealer around your lips. This not only corrects any minor mistakes but also creates a clean, defined lip line that lasts throughout the day.”
Finally, Hughes offers a versatile finishing tip: “Your choice of finish can dramatically alter your look. For a classic, velvety matte appearance, lightly dust your lips with translucent powder. If you’re after a touch of holiday glamour, add a dab of clear gloss to the centre of your bottom lip. This simple trick adds dimension and allure to your red lip look.”
