Ambience & Allure At Amber’s Restaurant

The beautiful spa town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire is well worth a visit, the famous home to The Great Yorkshire Show offers something to every type of visitor and as such it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.

It is a quaint and picturesque town based in the North of Yorkshire, with well kept open spaces and vibrant floral arrangements around every turn. Even a stroll in Harrogate is a pleasant experience.

Harrogate is a sophisticated town home to unique restaurants, quirky bars and pubs. The town centre hosts many boutiques and diverse attractions, such as the famous Turkish baths, Valley Gardens, museums and more for those wanting to peruse the localities.

Today, we are heading to Cedar Court Hotel, which happens to be the town’s very first hotel and is situated just a 15-minute walk from the town centre. Its origins trace back to the 17th century when it was first conceived as a lavish estate amidst the rolling landscapes of Harrogate. Over centuries, it evolved from a private residence into one of the town’s most iconic landmarks.

When it was constructed in the late 1670s, it stood as a beacon of luxury, blending traditional English architecture with innovative design elements. The building’s facade, adorned with intricately carved stonework and classic Georgian windows, reflects the architectural ambitions of its era.

Cedar Court has recently undergone a 500k renovation which has perfectly embraced its iconic heritage, while stylishly modernising and re-inventing the guest experience.

Amber’s restaurant is part of this extensive renovation project and it shows. Inspired by the spirit of Lady Amber Fitzwilliam*, the pioneering scientist and society wit who ran her famous salon from the hotel in the early twentieth century, Amber’s offers a Yorkshire take on contemporary British cuisine.

Though the entrance is rather grand, one feels immediately at ease on arrival as the well-turned-out concierge team offer a friendly welcome. After a seamless check in, drinks are served and it’s time to relax, you cannot beat Yorkshire hospitality (I know, I’m biased).

Jewel tones of coral and green sweep the ground floor creating a luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere. Head past the stylish cocktail bar and you’ll find the jewel in the crown at Cedar Court, Amber’s Restaurant is a beautifully arranged restaurant with well-thought-out booths allowing a little privacy when dining. It has been sympathetically restored to reflect the hotel’s past whilst staying firmly in the present with contemporary and inviting decor which boasts plush seating, beautiful and lavish flower arrangments and stunning historical features – just look up at the ceiling, the cornices are incredible.

Alongside the main restaurant and bar is a stunning private dining and entertaining space, The Imaginarium, with deep burnt orange walls, cream panelling and forest green drapes that suspend floor to ceiling. This diverse room offers flexibility with its adaptability for an intimate gathering by the original antique fireplace or a perfect space for a memorable occasion.

We are shown to our table by friendly staff and within no time, two tall glasses of crisp white wine and ice cold water arrive for the table. Whilst we were spoilt for choice, perusing the exquisite menu, we made our meal selections and waited in anticipation. If the food is as impressive and well thought out as the interior design, we were in for a treat.

For myself, I chose ‘Textures Of Vegetables’ which arrived beautifully presented. This dish was fresh, tasty, colourful and inventive. Who would have thought you could be so creative with vegetables?

Across the table to start was ‘The Harrogate blue twice baked soufflé’ – a soft creamy texture oozing salty and earthy flavours that simply melted in the mouth.

Pallet teased, we had high hopes for the mains…And they didn’t disappoint.

I opted for the ’12oz Pork Tomahawk’, accompanied with triple cooked chips, a large portobello mushroom, juicy tomato and rocket salad side. The Pork was delicious, tender and cooked to perfection. And those chips! Wow, well seasoned, crispy and fluffy in all the right places! A truly delightful dish.

Over the table sat the ‘Ambers 7oz Chargrilled burger’, topped with crispy bacon, cheddar, large tomato slice and gem lettuce with a flavoursome onion relish, further accompanied with skinny fries and homemade slaw – Now this was a juicy burger! They fine-tuned everything, from the handmade beef and toppings to the homemade slaw, this was a win.

Feeling pleasantly full we opted for a nightcap in the cosy bar before calling it a night and heading up to the second floor to our room.

Cedar Court offers plenty of options when it comes to accommodation, from business stays to family rooms, city break options and even honeymoon suites – there is something to suit every stay and every budget.

Overall, the perfect mix of delicious food, fantastic service and a great vibe. Amber’s restaurant is a great addition to Cedar Court Hotel and will no doubt flourish.
