It was widely reported earlier this year that Zante’s famous Shipwreck Beach in Greece would be closed for the summer. But Brits planning a visit to the island need not be disappointed as there are dozens of other stunning beaches to choose from.
From sheltered family friendly shores to party vibes – Zante offers something for everyone and there’s an abundance of places to stay that put you right in the heart of the action. While hotel and all-inclusive packages are rocketing in price, there are many tucked away apartments, villas, and houses on the island to consider instead, offering a laid-back and more cost-effective holiday.
The experts at James Villas have rounded up some of their favourite island beaches along with some epic places to stay. Whether it’s stunning cliff top sea views or direct beach access, pack up that picnic basket and head to one of these beautiful beaches this summer:
Agios Nikolaos
On the northern side of the island, this is one of the most popular beaches and has an abundance of water sports, activities, restaurants, and bars. Clear turquoise waters and sandy beach make it popular with families. The beach is named after a small chapel overlooking the sea – great for those all-important holiday snaps.
Stay in Villa Emerald – perched on the hilltops with uninterrupted sea views across the bay and towards Kefalonia. Sleeping up to eight in four bedrooms, the villa has an infinity pool and terrace area, open plan living, jacuzzi baths and kids pool and play area.
Limni Keriou
Located 21 km south of Zakynthos Town, the beach (meaning Keri Lake) is a small golden sliver of sand surrounded by lush greenery. A handful of cafes, bars and taverns can be found along the bay, with incredible views over the islet of Marathonisi. The nearby resort of Keri is quiet with traditional character.
Villa Terida is built from local stone for a traditional feel, with views over the village, mountains, and sea. Olive trees and mature gardens surround the swimming pool and covered terrace, while the house has three bedrooms and open plan living space with wooden beamed ceilings.
Agios Sostis
This small, picturesque beach is close to Laganas beach and is popular with families and couples, with its shallow clear waters and local taverns on the beachfront. A quaint wooden bridge leads from the beach to Cameo Island – the ideal spot for swimming, snorkelling and some selfies.
Overlooking the bay and with views of Cameo Island, Villa Agios Sostis Bay View II is a great spot to explore the nearby beaches and local life. The pool, terrace and almost every room inside have sea views and there is direct beach access from the villa. Three bedrooms, four bathrooms and open plan living, kitchen and dining area complete the interior.
Amboula
The soft golden sand and crystal-clear waters make this a beautiful if little-known beach on the island. Small piers with stairs bypass the rocky shores so you can step straight onto the sandy ocean floor. There are showers, a beach bar and several local tavernas.
Choose Apartment Paliokaliva Maisonetta to be just a short distance from the beach. Ideal for couples, this charming stone-built traditional property is surrounded by gardens and has access to an on-site restaurant and shared swimming pool. There’s a double mezzanine bedroom, bathroom and open plan living, dining and kitchen area.
