York Christmas Market Tips: Local’s 6 Best Insider Hacks for 2025

The festive season is here, and with it, the arrival of one of the most loved Christmas Markets in the country – York’s St Nicholas Fair, running from the 13th of November to the 21st of December, open 10am-7pm daily.

To help visitors have the best experience and get the most out of their visit, York local and Managing Director of Wheelwrights York, Jerry Rebbeck, shares six insider tips for enjoying the markets like a local.

1. Visit midweek to beat the crowds

“With the weekends and evenings being the most popular times to visit, try visiting during the week, specifically on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. There are still plenty of visitors to give it a buzzing atmosphere, but you will have more space to move around, and encounter less queues,” says Jerry.

“There is also a daily quiet period from 10.30am to 12pm ,which is music-free, perfect for any market goers who prefer a calmer experience.”

2. Go early for the best buys

To get the best range of stock, get there as the market opens, or just after. It’s smart to get there early to buy more popular items, as some may sell out later in the day. So, to taste your way around the market and have the best pick of gifts and produce, I’d suggest getting there earlier on a weekday, around 11am-12pm,” suggests Jerry.

“The vendors will have more time to speak to you during these hours as well, so can more readily answer any questions you might have.”

3. Plan your route ahead of time

“York isn’t a large city, but with its narrow and winding streets, it’s not hard to get lost, especially when it’s busy,” says Jerry.

“I’d recommend looking at the list of stalls on Visit York before you go. You’ll be able to see what’s on offer and where they will be located – from food and drink to homeware and gifts. Having a plan helps you make the most of your time and navigate better when it’s dark and crowded,” explains Jerry.

“I’d also advise wearing flat shoes such as trainers, as the ancient city has lots of uneven ground and cobble streets.”

4. Know where the toilets are

“York has several public toilets across the city, which is convenient for this primarily outdoor event,” says Jerry.

“Visit York has a full list of public toilets and where they are located, including accessible toilets which require a RADAR key. Having this information handy can save you time when you’re exploring the markets.”

5. Capturing magical photos during ‘blue hour’

“To take the most aesthetic photos at York markets, visit during ‘blue hour’, which is around 15-40 minutes after sunset”, suggests Jerry.

“As it’s just after sunset, the sky is a very dark blue, before transitioning to black. This low light, combined with the contrast of the twinkling lights of the market, makes for striking festive photos.”

6. Don’t miss York’s hidden festive gems

“The Christmas market’s main stalls and events are on Parliament Street and St Sampsons Square, but there is plenty more to see,” shares Jerry.

“I’d recommend more hidden attractions such as the Christmas Tree Festival, which features over 70 decorated trees on display inside York Minster’s Nave, Chapter House and Lady Chapel. Fairfax house, an 18th century Georgian townhouse in the heart of the city, also hosts splendid Christmas displays. York Castle Museum is another festive hidden gem – they decorate their Victorian Kirkgate street as a Dickensian Christmas.
