Understanding The Process Of Invisalign Braces

Tuesday 12th Apr 2022 |

It might seem as though Invisalign has been an option in the world of orthodontics for quite a while, but in reality, the company that started the Invisalign revolution was founded less than 20 years ago. They certainly didn’t take off as a concept straight away either. In fact, it wasn’t until 2004 that the idea of this newer type of treatment for the realigning of teeth really took off.

Invisalign suggests that to date over 12 million people have used their products. This figure includes 1.4 million teens, making them a very popular choice.

At  dentists across the country, including Holly House Dental there is a clear goal; all good dentists want your Invisalign journey to be a great one with positive results. Part of this includes knowing what to expect, so let’s take a look at what the process involves and answer some of those questions patients frequently ask.

What does the process involve?

The entire Invisalign process is a very simple one from start to finish. An assessment is done using a 3D digital scan, X-rays and photographs. Once this has been completed your dentist will use the Smile Simulation software to show you what your straightened smile might look like. Once your tailor-made Invisalign aligners have been made you will need to wear them for between 20 and 22 hours every day, and they will need to be changed every 1-2 weeks (this will be discussed with you). When the treatment is complete you will have fit retainers that will help you to keep your new smile looking great.

Who is it suitable for?

The good news is that Invisalign is a great treatment that is suitable for both adults and teens. Whilst there is no actual minimum age limit for wearing Invisalign it is recommended that they are not used until around the age of 12, in much the same way as more traditional braces as this is considered to be the optimum age as a child’s jaw and mouth are still growing.

Because Invisalign are clear, and far more discrete than a more traditional brace, they are the perfect choice for anyone who is looking to correct a problem with misaligned teeth but is self-conscious about how braces may look. This makes them particularly suitable for anyone working in a customer facing role or a self-conscious teen who might be worried about what their peers might think.

How long will it be before I see results?

The Invisalign system is a very clever one that applies gentle pressure to the right part of an individual’s teeth in order to encourage them to move into the right position. Different people will have different degrees of misalignment, and this means that treatment time can vary. The complexity of movement in an individual’s mouth will also play a part in this however it is expected that everyone should notice some improvement in just a few weeks after they begin the treatment. A complete course of treatment can take just 6 months in some cases, but the length of time it takes really will depend on each individual.

The dos and don’ts of Invisalign

Finally, there are a few do’s and don’ts that you will need to remember when using Invisalign:

  1.     Soak your aligners at least once a day
  2.     Brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners in
  3.     Consider the snacks that you eat carefully – taking your aligners out to eat means it may be difficult to keep them in 20-22 hours if you eat a lot of snacks
  4.     Avoid too much caffeine as it can stain your aligners
  5.     Remember to store your aligners in their case to avoid exposure to airborne pathogens and bacteria build-up
  6.     Don’t use scented or coloured soap to clean your aligners – this can leave residue which might stain and may give them an unpleasant taste

7.     Don’t smoke
