This year the clean girl, minimalist aesthetic has continued to have its moment as many have come to adopt the elegant, less is more style. Characterised by simple, classic pieces, this aesthetic is timeless.
According to TikTok’s creator Search Insights, “minimalist style” has seen searches increase by a whopping 1000% in the past 7 days alone
Fashion at this time of the year is often much more overstated, with sequins and feathers adorning many partywear outfits. Lots of us are clearly in need of inspiration, with Google searches for ‘christmas party outfit’ increasing by 2186% in the last 30 days. Searches for “work christmas party” are also at an all-time high, with the term being searched for 40% more than “kids christmas party” over the past week.
To help inspire those with minimalist style this party season, the fashion team at NEXT have worked with stylist Ali Lees to offer partywear styling tips for those that want to feel festive without the fuss.
- Play with textures
“If you don’t like the glitz of sequins and glamour of glitter, add seasonal interest to your outfits with subtle details like textures, cuts and colours instead. Satin, silk and velvet all look incredible this time of year. Their gorgeous textures whisper grown-up glamour and the fabrics look sumptuous as they catch the twinkling Christmas lights. Wear these textures in darker colours, like a navy or black satin midi skirt, if you prefer not to be too bold with your fashion choices.
- Make the most of monotone
“If you love the quiet luxury of a neutral colour palette, use it to your favour by wearing the same shade from head-to-toe in different textures. If black is your go-to colour, how about mixing a short-sleeved knitted sweater with a faux leather midi skirt and knee-high suedette boots all in black. Throw an oversized wool coat over the top and you’re good to go!
- Consider low-key layers
“Layering always helps achieve a ‘styled’ appearance. If your partywear look is low-key with clean lines, you can use jewellery, waistcoats, cardigans and scarves to build up an outfit for added interest. A just-visible shirt collar under a sweater dress with an added belt and gold pendant necklace gives a ‘put together’ look without shouting too loudly for attention.
- Add subtle seasonal twists
“Sometimes the smallest details are all an outfit needs to achieve a subtly elevated seasonal twist. Look out for buttons featuring semi-precious stones, satin bow details or beaded cuffs. You can also bring the party feeling by wearing a belt with an ornate buckle or shoes that sparkle whilst keeping the other 90% of your outfit minimalist.
