Running mania: What to bring along for your first run

Thursday 10th Oct 2024 |

The running bug has definitely hit the UK, with plenty of people now feeling inspired by online influencers.

Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are now filled with individuals showcasing their running journey and providing tips for novices. This has helped to bring a new wave of athletes to the sport, and over 800,000 people have even applied for the London Marathon this year.

Events may seem some way off if you’re just getting into it, but taking those first steps could kickstart a lifelong obsession with running. If you feel inspired and want to go for a jog, here’s what to bring along.

Choosing the right footwear
Your shoes are essential for comfort and performance. This can be an intense sport and a good pair of trainers can protect your knees, feet and joints from injury.   There are several features to look for when picking your footwear, including cushioning, flexibility, traction and a lightweight feel.

As it’s your first jog, you don’t need to go out and buy the most expensive pair. Instead, wear sensible trainers you already own or get a budget-friendly set while deciding if you like it.

Functional attire
Running is an all-season sport, but you’ll need the right clothing for additional comfort. Try the following outfit combinations depending on these seasons:

Winter: A breathable thermal base layer, T-shirt or sweatshirt, lightweight coat, tracksuit bottoms or leggings and accessories like gloves or a hat.

Spring and autumn: A warm base layer, T-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts with tights underneath or leggings and a lightweight jacket on windy or rainy days.

Summer: A T-shirt or vest, shorts or leggings, sweatbands and caps.

Essential accessories
Bringing along accessories can make the exercise a little easier. Music is something that many enthusiasts swear by, so a great set of headphones is important. One study revealed that music helps to combat mental fatigue, which may be useful during your first attempt.

A water bottle is another popular accessory to take. Staying hydrated is vital as a runner, as it can reduce fatigue while you’re out and about. A smaller bottle may be easier to carry, so you don’t feel too weighed down.

Good visibility is crucial if you’re going after dark and a headtorch is an ideal solution. Don’t forget to wear high-visibility or reflective clothing to ensure drivers can clearly see you.
