Why Your Foundation Cracks in Winter — And How to Fix It, According to a Makeup Expert

With temperatures plummeting around the UK, those prone to dry skin may notice that foundation starts to crack and sit unevenly on the skin.

So, what’s the key to flawless skin during winter?

We spoke to Franchesca Villar, make-up expert at Cosmetify, who explains why your foundation base can be trickier to perfect at this time of year, along with her top tips to keep your skin glowing and smooth through the colder months.

Why does my foundation keep cracking in winter?

“If you find that your foundation sits unevenly on the skin during the winter months, you’re not alone. Foundation cracking is extremely common when temperatures drop, largely due to changes in skin condition caused by the cold.

“Lower temperatures, harsher winds and more time spent indoors around central heating all strip the skin of its natural moisture, leaving it dry, tight and often flaky. When foundation is applied over dehydrated skin, it clings to dry patches and creases, causing makeup to settle, separate and crack throughout the day instead of sitting smoothly.

“Understanding why foundation cracks in winter is the first step to preventing it. It’s less about the product itself and more about adapting your hydration and application techniques as conditions change.”

Below, Franchesca Villar shares her top tips for keeping your foundation flawless all year round:

1. Focus on hydration

“Colder weather and indoor heating can quickly dehydrate the skin, so it’s essential to help your skin lock in as much moisture as possible.

“Start with a moisturiser suited to your skin type and give it time to fully absorb before applying foundation. This creates a smooth, hydrated base. You might also consider hydrating serums and gentle cleansers to help maintain moisture levels and improve how long your foundation lasts.”

2. Exfoliate gently

“Built-up dead skin can cause foundation to sit unevenly and break apart during the day.

“That’s why exfoliation is key during the winter. Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week smooths the skin’s texture without causing irritation or additional dryness.”

3. Switch to hydrating makeup formulas

“Matte or long-wear foundations can make dryness more noticeable, especially in colder months. Consider swapping them for liquid or cream foundations with a dewy or satin finish. These formulations move more naturally with the skin, reducing the risk of creasing or cracking.”

4. Apply foundations in light layers

“If your foundation looks uneven in colder weather, you might be applying too much product at once, which can lead to caking and separation as the skin dries.

“Instead, build coverage gradually using light layers. This helps the foundation blend more seamlessly and stay put throughout the day.”

5. Use powder sparingly

“Powder can help set your makeup, but in winter it may draw attention to dry areas or strip the skin of remaining moisture.

“Use it only where needed to keep your complexion fresh and avoid a heavy or cracked finish.”
