Expert 7 point plan for oily skin

Oily skin is characterised by an overproduction of sebum, the natural oil produced by the sebaceous glands.

Dr Barbara Kubicka, Founder, Director and Doctor of Clinicbe says that if you notice persistent shininess, a greasy feel to your skin even after washing, or oil build-up, especially across your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), you likely have oily skin. Enlarged pores, frequent clogging, and a predisposition to acne are also common indicators.

What Causes Oily Skin?

Oily skin is primarily genetic, linked to the size and activity of sebaceous glands, which are associated with hair follicles. Individuals with thicker hair may have larger or more active oil glands. Hormonal fluctuations also significantly influence oil production, which is why oily skin and acne often emerge during puberty or around menstruation for those who menstruate.

While it may not be possible to change the underlying causes of oily skin, effective management strategies can help control excess sebum and prevent associated concerns such as acne. Here are my top recommendations for managing oily skin:

Dr. Kubicka’s Recommendations for Controlling Oily Skin

  1. Avoid Touching Your Face

Although it may be tempting, touching your face transfers dirt, oil, and bacteria from your hands to your skin, potentially worsening acne or irritation. Only touch your face when cleansing, moisturising, or applying sunscreen or makeup, and ensure your hands are clean beforehand.

  1. Cleanse Your Face Twice Daily

Cleansing in the morning and evening is crucial for removing debris, oil, and impurities. Use a gentle cleanser with hydroxy acids or benzoyl peroxide, but avoid over-washing or scrubbing, as this can irritate the skin and lead to increased oil production.

  1. Choose the Right Cleanser

Avoid oil- or alcohol-based cleansers, which can irritate the skin. Opt for gel, foam, or cream cleansers designed for oily skin. Products containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid can help control oil production but should be used cautiously to prevent irritation.

  1. Use Oil-Free and Non-Comedogenic Products

Always select skincare and makeup products labelled as “oil-free” and “non-comedogenic,” which means they won’t clog your pores. Matte formulations are particularly helpful for reducing shine.

  1. Don’t Skip Moisturiser

Even oily skin needs hydration. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to maintain skin balance and prevent rebound oil production caused by over-drying.

  1. Remove Makeup Before Bed

Sleeping in makeup clogs pores and exacerbates oiliness and acne. Ensure you thoroughly remove all makeup before going to sleep.

  1. Use Blotting Papers

Blotting papers are a convenient way to manage oil throughout the day. Gently press the paper onto oily areas and hold for a few seconds to absorb excess sebum without spreading it.
