Crying on a Plane: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Tuesday 03rd Dec 2024 |

New research has shown that almost half of Brits will be flying to long-haul destinations this year, with 46% of people surveyed heading for a far-flung destination.

With flights over 6 hours classed as long haul, many Brits will opt to pass the time watching a film or three, especially with the option to watch their pick of the endless viewing material available through airlines or offline viewing on popular streaming platforms like Netflix.

But experts have warned that holidaymakers should pick their next film very carefully to avoid accidentally joining the ‘Mile Cry’, in which fliers experience enhanced sadness when flying.

Why you’re more likely to cry on a plane

According to Manchester-based airport transfer experts, SCS chauffeurs, “Travel can often be a fraught and emotional time – you might have just said farewell to loved ones before leaving, or be anxious about flying.

This is coupled with low cabin or air pressure which can reduce the oxygen in the brain. It is associated with a raft of emotional effects, including increased negative mood and a diminished ability to handle stress.

Throw in a tear-jerking film and it’s understandable why people may end up more likely to have an emotional reaction on a plane.”

Films to avoid on planes:

  • 1. Titanic (1997)
  • 2. Marley & Me (2008)
  • 3. The Green Mile (1999)
  • 4. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
  • 5. Schindler’s List (1993)
  • 6. The Lion King (1994)
  • 7. My Girl (1991)
  • 8. The Notebook (2004)
  • 9. P.S. I Love You (2007)
  • 10. Up (2009)

Top tips in avoiding stress when travelling:

Research your destination: Understand local customs, currency, and transportation options.

Get enough sleep and eat healthy meals to maintain your energy levels.
