Circe’s Rooftop: Summer Dining on High in Waterloo

Monday 12th May 2025 |

When the sun starts shining in London Town we all become somewhat obsessed with drinking and dining al fresco.

Patios, courtyards and roof terraces suddenly seem to appear all around the city and Londoners flock there to soak up some of that summer spirit.

My personal favourite is a rooftop bar and restaurant. There’s something magical about looking down on London’s vibrant streets and looking across the stunning skyline with its myriad landmarks, both old and new. Today I’m excited about visiting somewhere new (to me anyway).

Circe’s Rooftop opened in Spring 2024, though I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. It’s in an extremely convenient location, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Waterloo Station (take the Waterloo Road exit). We climb the stairs and emerge in bright sunlight on high.

Decorated in pinks and yellows with loungers, sofas and comfy chairs, it almost feels like we’ve been transported to another country. But spectacular views of the Shard, London Eye, Walkie Talkie and other shiny buildings serve as a constant reminder that we are in the nation’s capital.

Circe’s has an excellent cocktail and wine list and a menu inspired by the Mediterranean with a range of sharing plates made using fresh seasonal ingredients. We share six of them between us, all light and tasty – just right for summertime dining outdoors.

Our standout favourites are the taramasalata and pea shoots served on crispy potato rosti and the tiger prawns with chilli, garlic, parsley, extra virgin olive oil on toasted focaccia. Both dishes are bursting with flavour and that soft, pillowy focaccia infused with a touch of chilli olive oil is a bread concoction made in heaven.

I can see the future for Circe’s Rooftop. Especially if the sun keeps shining. It’s going to become a firm favourite in the list of London’s rooftops. So get there quickly and try it for yourself.

Circe’s Rooftop is at Mercury House, 117 Waterloo Road, London SE1 8UL
