A Midweek Visit to Ambience in Collingham That Turned Into a New Local Favourite
I’m lucky enough to eat out all over the UK and beyond — it comes with the territory as a writer — so I often skip local eateries in favour of the odd night in. But living in Yorkshire means I have a wealth of wonderful places to eat right on my doorstep, and on the rare occasion I can muster the motivation to put some slap on and head out midweek, I feel like I need to shout about it if I’ve found somewhere I really rate.
So earlier this week, I ventured out for a midweek feed. I’ve driven past this place at least once a week since it opened a couple of years ago — I’m always popping into the Tesco next door — and it’s consistently looked inviting. There are always cars in the car park and, perhaps tellingly, there’s a 5-star hygiene rating proudly displayed on the door. I know, I know — but when you write about restaurants as much as I do, it’s something you can’t help but notice.
So, when I popped in at around 6pm on the off chance they had a table for two, I was curious to see what Ambience in Collingham had to offer. I’d already had a look at the menu online and knew it leaned towards Mediterranean flavours — but seeing it properly in front of me confirmed just how much choice there was.
From small plates like calamari fritti, bruschetta and spicy scallops, to more substantial dishes including seafood risottos, grilled kebabs, pizzas and classic pasta, it’s the kind of menu that genuinely has something for everyone. There’s a nice balance between comforting staples and slightly more elevated dishes, with plenty of options whether you’re after something light or some proper indulgence.
Greeted warmly — and with no hint of an eye roll for turning up without a reservation — my guest and I were shown to a table by the window and promptly offered drinks. I do like to be offered a drink fairly quickly, if I’m honest. A nice glass of wine to accompany a proper look through the menu is always welcome. Box ticked.
I wish I could say I had the appetite for three courses, but on this occasion it wasn’t on either of our bingo cards. MAFS was on in an hour and I had plans — namely, being fully prepped in loungewear with a packet of Revels in hand. Judge all you like.
So, we went straight in for mains — no messing around. I opted for the chicken kebab, while my guest chose the mixed grill — swapping out the bulgur wheat for skin-on fries, which wasn’t a problem at all.
Our mains arrived in good time and were presented beautifully — the kind of plates that make you pause for a second before diving in.
My chicken kebab was exactly what you want it to be — generous chunks of lightly charred chicken, still juicy in the middle with that unmistakable smoky edge from the grill. It came with a neatly packed dome of spiced rice, a fresh, crisp salad and two dips that did exactly what they needed to — one cool and creamy, the other with a bit more punch. It felt balanced, fresh, and more importantly, properly satisfying without being too heavy. I was briefly tempted by adding a Greek salad on the side, but in all honesty, it just wasn’t needed — the portions were more than generous.
The mixed grill was a bit of a showstopper. A hearty spread of grilled meats — lamb chops, chicken and skewered pieces — all cooked with that same charred finish that tells you it’s been done properly. The lamb chops in particular looked tender with just the right amount of caramelisation on the outside. Served alongside those golden skin-on fries, a fresh salad and dipping sauces, it felt like proper value — a full-on feast rather than just a meal.
By the time we’d finished, we both said the same thing — we should have visited much sooner. It’s safe to say it’s now firmly on the list for regular local outings.
So, while I can’t talk you through a whole spread of dishes on this occasion, what we did have was of a really high standard — and the plates I saw heading to other tables looked just as good. On that basis alone, this place absolutely warrants a return visit for a more thorough feast.
That’s how I roll, to be fair — dip a toe in, get a feel for the place, then go back for the full-blown event.
One thing I can say with confidence — and for me, this is the key to eating out — is that they’ve got the service spot on. Proper wine service was offered, food arrived in a timely manner, check-backs were done, and the little details — like clearing extra cutlery — didn’t go unnoticed. All the things I look for in a good, fairly casual eatery were there.
And the best part? The people. A genuinely happy team, smiley servers, and a really — really — welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.
Our bill came to £85, including a £30 bottle of wine, and for the quality of the food, the level of service and the overall experience, that feels like excellent value.
I’d eat here again all day long.
My advice – book your table and enjoy their superb hospitality – tell them I sent you.
