Hosting a Garden Party? These Are the Fire Pit Rules You Need to Know – Or Risk a £5,000 Fine

Even chimeneas and BBQs can land you in trouble if you don’t follow these home and garden safety tips.

As summer finally sets in and Brits flock outdoors with fire pits, BBQs and fairy lights, Chorlton Fireworks is warning that some common garden set-ups could actually be breaching fire safety laws – and even result in fines.

The brand – best known for its garden-safe fireworks and expert safety advice – has issued a checklist of things every homeowner should do before lighting up the patio.

“People think because it’s a small fire or a stylish chimenea it’s safe – but that’s not always the case,” said a spokesperson for Chorlton Fireworks. “In summer especially, dry gardens, decking, and soft furnishings can be a dangerous mix. If your setup causes heavy smoke or fire damage, you could be held responsible.”

Garden Fires and the Law – What Most People Don’t Know:

You can be fined up to £5,000 if smoke from your fire is classed as a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Burning the wrong material – like painted wood, damp logs or rubbish – is illegal and releases toxic chemicals.

You must avoid lighting fires in windy conditions or near overhanging trees, fences, and sheds.

BBQs, fire pits and chimeneas must be kept away from decking, parasols, and outdoor furniture.

Before Lighting Up the Garden:

Create a safe zone – clear at least 1.5 metres around the fire pit or BBQ.

Use the right fuel – seasoned dry wood only, no rubbish or accelerants.

Check wind direction – and avoid smoky fires near neighbours’ windows.

Keep a bucket of water or hosepipe nearby.

Don’t leave flames unattended, even if it’s just a “smouldering” pit.

With outdoor hosting on the rise, Chorlton Fireworks is encouraging Brits to enjoy their garden nights responsibly – and avoid turning summer fun into an emergency.
