The Lazy Day ‘Just for the Cake of it’ Campaign, which will launch at the start of Allergy Awareness Week (24th-30th April 2023) and will run throughout May, will focus on the happiness that cake can bring, celebrating the joy of cake for all.
The sharing of food has always been part of the human story and cake is embedded in British culture. Cake has a special way of creating joy and bringing people together and there is science behind why it can make you so happy! It’s not just about the deliciousness of eating the cake, which can increase the levels of feel-good hormones and even make you more productive, but sharing the joy, savouring the experience and creating memories.
For too long, those with food allergies have often felt excluded from this joy. With an all-time high number of people with food allergies, raising awareness of the everyday reality of living with such limitations has never been more important. In the UK alone, an estimated two million people are living with a diagnosed food allergy, and 600,000 with Coeliac Disease.
Lazy Day founders Dr Sally Beattie and Emer Bustard, both professional food scientists and passionate foodies, know only too well the difficulties and disappointments that restricted diets can bring. The much-loved Lazy Day treats are hand baked in a dedicated vegan, gluten-free, milk and egg-free bakery in Scotland, and there are no nuts on-site either. Lazy Day wants to raise awareness of food allergies, encourage inclusivity around moments of cake joy and urge people to venture down the Free From aisle when seeking out a celebration cake to ensure the cake can be enjoyed by all.

Throughout the ‘Just For The Cake of It’ campaign, Lazy Day has scheduled a range of activities to shine the spotlight on the joy of sharing cake and the happiness it can bring, from promotions and cake giveaways, to expert tips and advice. People will be encouraged to create their own inclusive cake-occasions and will be invited to download a range of free cake topper designs from the ‘Just For The Cake Of It’ page on their website. Lazy Day Cake-Occasions are about choosing happiness and joy amongst the busyness of life and making time to schedule in a cake break with friends, family or colleagues…just for the cake of it!
The Science of How Cake Can Make You Happy
Science has shown that sharing a plate of your favourite cake, in moderation of course, can have both physical and mental benefits.
Psychologist Sarah Waite says, “Cakes and celebrations are often reserved for special occasions, but we’re missing a trick here — some of the healthiest, happiest people live the sweet life. Sure, they exercise and eat well, but they regularly feed their happiness too — enjoying time with nourishing friends/colleagues and savouring small pleasures. Research shows happiness doesn’t just feel good, it does good — happier people live longer, healthier lives.”
Nutritionist, Kate Cook commented: “Food isn’t always about the molecules, and virtuousness of eating perfectly; food should be about enjoyment, inclusiveness, sharing and the pure joy. Having the occasional indulgence, shared with friends, creates community by forging social bonds; eating together stimulates happiness. Humans are evolutionarily primed to seek out sweetness, which stimulates the production of feel-good hormones – of course, moderation is key.”
